Update on Capped 2024 Open Access Publishing Agreements

Three of the University’s open access publishing agreements will soon exhaust their annual article coverage caps. The Wiley cap will effectively be reached on or around 28 September, Springer Nature around 14 October, and Taylor & Francis around 27 October. Other agreements are not expected to exhaust their caps this year.

Research articles with University of Melbourne corresponding authors submitted to eligible hybrid (subscription) journals must be accepted for publication (and authors must complete their author agreements) before the cut-off dates indicated above to have open access publishing fees covered. For articles published behind paywalls, authors can pursue repository open access at no cost.

For Wiley’s fully open access journals, a portion of the cap will be set aside to cover articles submitted before the cut-off date. Eligible articles submitted before this date and accepted for publication before the end of the year will be covered unless the cap is exhausted, although this should be unlikely given current acceptance rates.

All caps reset on 1 January 2025, although the Springer Nature and Wiley agreements conclude on 31 December 2024 and are currently being renegotiated. The Library’s Scholarly Communications team will communicate new and renewed 2025 agreements later this year. Visit the Library’s Open Access Publishing page for agreement details and the latest updates.
