DATA BITES & Reel Impact

DATA BITES

This new community is a place and time to discuss all matters related to data science – quantitative or qualitative, practical or theoretical, or new and in need of debate.

To kick off, MDAP are holding a curated series of sessions: DATA BITES.

These initial, regular sessions will be held around topics including data linkage and governance, data cleaning, containerisation, and analysis.

Overall, this is a place to share knowledge, meet like-minded people and interrogate the many dynamic ways data science engages with our everyday.

MDAP hope to build a community of EMCRs across the university who see this as an opportunity to learn from one another. The face of research is changing – not operating in silos and DATA BITES is one way of supporting interdisciplinary research.

MDAP will start with fundamental conversations – to help fill knowledge gaps or offer creative ways to expand our thinking when working with data.

The first session in the series will take place in a few weeks!

Topic: “Types of data and data collection”
Date: Tuesday 28th May
Time: 4 – 6pm AEDT (session 4-5pm, followed by drinks and snacks)
Venue: Level 8 Social Space, Melbourne Connect
Panelists:

Ella Dumaresq (Lecturer in Creative Arts Therapy, Victorian College of the Arts)

Usha Nattala (Research Data Specialist, Melbourne Data Analytics Platform)

Astrid Zeman (Research Fellow in Data Science, Melbourne Centre for Data Science)

Reel Impact 2024 EOI Submissions

EOI submissions OPEN for the Reel Impact 2024 Introductory Workshop on 6 June. Apply here!

Up to three winning entries will each receive $8,000 to collaborate with their choice of professional media storyteller to create an animated or live-action production to highlight the impact that has been achieved through their research.

The Reel Impact prize recognises and encourages research translation at the University of Melbourne by challenging researchers to succinctly describe the impact their research has had within society to a non-specialist audience.

To enter, researchers are invited to present their research impact as either a 60-second engaging video or a visual storyboard.

The competition will challenge researchers to succinctly describe their research and the impact it has had within society, to a non-specialist audience, and will also provide a unique opportunity to build their research translation and digital literacy skills.

Up to three winning entries will each receive $8,000 to collaborate with their choice of professional media storyteller to create an animated or live-action production to highlight the impact that has been achieved through their research.
