The term well-being refers to a state of emotional satisfaction, contentment, and self-actualisation that one achieves by concentrating on their purpose, meaning, and self-realisation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the well-being of
students. While all students have been impacted, certain groups, such as those with
disabilities, indigenous children, and at-risk children, have been affected more severely
and are likely to experience the effects for a longer period.
In this seminar, Dr Andriana will present findings from a study that investigated wellbeing
in these groups through the use of photovoice. A team of researchers were trained with
topics of research, wellbeing and photovoice method. They then used the photovoice
method to investigate children’s wellbeing in three distinct locations – Yogyakarta,
Kupang and a jungle child community in Jambi. Findings from this unique study include
understandings of wellbeing as self-acceptance and personal growth, having a sense of
purpose, positive interpersonal relationships and enjoyment of learning. However, there
were also concerning findings, such as being tired of writing tasks, experiencing sexual
harassment, feeling excluded, and avoiding self-evaluation.
