What Melbourne’s Principles for Open Access Mean for You – Open Access Update for Academics, Supervisors & GRs
Following a period of consultation across the Academy, the Principles for Open Access to Research Outputs at Melbourne have been revised in light of recent developments both nationally and internationally. The revised Principles for Open Access are now live on the Open Scholarship website, along with a new Repository Open Access page, which links to advice on rights retention.

These revisions strengthen the University’s position on open access and align with funding agency policy changes (e.g., NHMRC). They articulate the University’s preferred pathways to open access: using repositories, publishing in open access venues, using institutional open access publishing agreements, and publishing in journals transitioning to full open access. These pathways include no-fee options for both open access publishing and repository open access. The Principles also encourage authors to pursue full and immediate open access for journal articles and conference papers, including via author rights retention practices.
The Scholarly Communications team has organised a webinar to explore these updates:
“What Melbourne’s Principles for Open Access Mean for You” will run on:
Thursday, 14 September 2023, 12:00pm – 1:00pm.
