STE Dialogue: Prof Tom Popkewitz & Prof Fazal Rizvi (Dec 12, 3.00-5.00pm)
Social Transformations in Education will be hosting a ‘round table’ of informal conversations with Professor Tom Popkewitz (University Wisconsin-Madison) and Professor Fazal Rizvi (University of Melbourne).
Professor Tom Popkewitz’s work is concerned with the cultural politics of education knowledge and its comparative reason and the social epistemology of curriculum, pedagogy and research as practices that create differences in kinds of people and distribute differences. He is currently exploring these processes in relation to international assessment programs (e.g., PISA) and the ‘impracticality’ of practical research.
Professor Fazal Rizvi’s work traverses policy studies, global and transnational movements in education, and the cultural politics of education. He is currently working on the challenges of decolonization, the shifting geopolitics of education, and the rise of populism in education.
Graduate researchers and early career researchers are especially welcome to contribute to these dialogues. This could include highlighting current questions or dilemmas they are encountering in their own work and inviting responses and reflections from Tom and Fazal, in the spirit of constructive and open dialogue. The accent will be on conceptual and methodological questions, perhaps focussed on particular projects, and then opening out for broader discussion.
