Graduate Researcher Orientation

Welcome to your PhD or MPhil program at the University of Melbourne. GR Orientation will be held on Monday the 8th of April and will be split into two parts: a welcome keynote and panel event from 10am-12pm, and a provider fair from 12-2.30pm. Start your journey with a keynote and panel hosted by Prof Justin Zobel, featuring insights from both current and past graduate researchers. This session offers practical advice to help you navigate the early stages of your research career. Follow this with a visit to the Provider and Services Fair, where you’ll find information on the university’s support services, including Careers and Employability, Counselling and Psychological Services, Academic Skills and more. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the resources available to you as a graduate researcher and to connect with others over free food and coffee.

Work-Life Balance for Graduate Researchers: Time Management Strategies

Date: Tuesday 16 April

Time: 1-2pm

Venue: Market Hall (Bn 189) G01

In this monthly lunchtime series, Dr Angela Nicholas, Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing will facilitate interactive workshops discussing strategies and hacks for how you can work smart during your postgraduate research years and keep a life outside. This is a great opportunity to improve your effectiveness during your study hours so that you can maintain your life outside and meet some new people facing the same challenges as you. This workshop provides you with breathing techniques for calm and will focus on calendar blocking as a visual representation for managing your time. A light lunch will be provided.

Supervisor Development Series: Shaping our GRs’ ‘Home Away from Home’

Welcome to our monthly Supervision Development Series. Here we aim to empower, educate, and celebrate the art of supervision. The next session features an in-person panel exploring place-making for international research higher degree students in Australia. First, we share common challenges that are encountered when supervising international GRs. We then explore supervisory ideas, tactics and inclusive approaches that can support our GRs to thrive-in and with multiple communities. We draw inspiration and lessons learned from the diverse perspectives that will be shared by supervisors as well as those being supervised. The session will be followed by Morning tea and an opportunity to connect with other supervisors of GRs across the University

Supervising Indigenous Graduate Researchers

Date: Thursday 2 May

The University of Melbourne welcomes and supports Indigenous graduate researchers and the Indigenous Strategy (2023-2027) commits to ensuring their cultural safety and academic sovereignty while working and studying at the University. We invite all interested research supervisors to this one-day workshop which will explore the opportunities and challenges of quality supervision for Indigenous graduate researchers. We will explore the shifting narrative from deficit focused to recognising the value of Indigenous knowledges and reposition Indigenous graduate researchers as change makers. Hosted by academic champion A/Prof. Shawana Andrews, Director of the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.
