Update on Capped 2023 Open Access Publishing Agreements

Two of the University’s major open access publishing agreements will reach their annual article coverage caps in coming months. Projections currently indicate that the Springer Nature cap will be reached on or around 31 October, and the Wiley cap will be reached on or around 14 November. Other capped agreements are not projected to reach their open access publishing caps this year.

For Springer Nature and Wiley hybrid (subscription) journals, if an article is accepted after the cap has been reached, it will be published behind a paywall (unless an APC is paid). Note that for Wiley open access journals, including Hindawi journals, APC coverage is secured at the point of submission, not acceptance.

The University encourages authors to deposit Author Accepted Manuscripts (AAMs) of paywalled articles in a repository, such as Minerva Access, to pursue free repository open access options. You can read more about the University’s approach to open access in the Principles for Open Access to Research Outputs at Melbourne (updated July 2023).

Under the University’s open access publishing agreements, corresponding authors affiliated with the University of Melbourne can avoid open access Article Processing Charges (APCs) for eligible journal articles. Details of each agreement, along with an A-Z list of all covered titles and their cap statuses, can be found on the Library’s Open Access Publishing page.
